Iran – Immediate freedom for Iranian blogger Mohammad Reza Pourshajari

URGENT ACTION

Mohammad Reza Pourshajari, 52, blogger, was arrested on September 14, 2010 and taken to an IRGC-controlled ward in Rajai Shahr Prison, Karaj.  His daughter, Mitra Pourshajari told Justice For Iran (JFI) that her father had to endure seven months in solitary confinement before he was taken to court, blindfolded and without the presence of an attorney. Mr. Pourshajari was sentenced to a total of three years in prison for “Insulting the ‘Supreme Leader’ and “Acting against national security”, however he was not informed of the verdict until six months after it was issued.
On December 21, 2011, Judge Gholam Sarabi of branch 109 of the Karaj Revolutionary Court sentenced Mr. Pourshajari to an additional year in prison for “Insulting the Prophet and Imams”. Other than the Judge, Mr. Pourshajari, and a soldier, no one else was present in the courtroom.
Mr. Pourshajari has not had an attorney present at any stage of the judicial processes. Judge Gholam Sarabi has reportedly banned Mr. Pourshajari from his right to legal representation. 
Following nearly one year in Rajai Shahr, Mr. Pourshajari had contracted multiple illnesses and required medical furlough, but instead prison authorities transferred him to his present location, Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj. Last year reports surfaced that he is being held with prisoners carrying disease or charged with murder, and the area is infested with cockroaches and lice. According to close sources, Mr. Pourshajari fears that he may one day be killed by the other prisoners. He is reportedly the only political prisoner in Ghezel Hesar.
Despite Mr. Pourshajari’s deteriorating physical health and urgent need for proper medical care, sources say Judge Gholam Sarabi has refused to consider him “unsuitable to tolerate imprisonment”.

Tunisia – Immediate medical care for Jabeur Mejri

URGENT ACTION
Wikipedia - Ghazi Beji and Jabeur Mejri are Tunisian citizens sentenced on 28 March 2012 to 7.5 years' imprisonment for "transgressing morality, defamation and disrupting public order" after posting naked caricatures of Mohammad to Facebook. Mejri faced trial in court, while his friend Beji was convicted in absentia, having fled to Europe to escape prosecution. Mejri's appeal of his sentence was denied on 25 June 2012. Mejri's lawyer objected to his client being denied medical evaluation, describing him as "mentally unstable" and unemployed for the past six years.
Amnesty International named the two men prisoners of conscience, "convicted solely for their peacefully held views", and described the case as one of the Tunisian government's "mounting attacks on freedom of expression". The organization called on Tunisia to drop the sentences against both men immediately. The International Freedom of Expression Exchange described the sentencing as "an extremely disturbing event", naming it as part of a pattern of "repeated attacks against journalists, artists and women who commit the 'crime' to express their opinions freely".

Iran - Stop the execution and immediate medical care for Younes Aghayan

URGENT ACTION

HRANA News Agency –  Younes Aghayan, ethnic prisoner sentenced to death who was transferred from Mahabad prison to solitary confinement in Urmia prison on Wednesday, December 26, 2012, is on hunger strike from that day.
According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Younes Aghayan, a follower of the Yari faith (Ahl-e Haq), ethnic prisoner who is sentenced to death, was transferred from Mahabad prison to solitary confinement in Urmia prison. He is on hunger strike from the day he was transferred to solitary confinement. There is fear of his execution.
Younes Aghayan is a follower of the Yari faith (Ahl-e Haq) from the village of Ooch Tappeh, near Miandoab. In October 2004, police raided Ooch Tappeh village to remove signs with religious writings of Yari faith. When villagers resisted the raid and confronted the police, Younes Aghayan, 21, and another Yari faith follower by the name of Mehdi Ghassemzadeh (Aghayan’s uncle) were arrested. In January 2005, the two men were put on trial by Branch Two of Mahabad Revolutionary Court, and were sentenced to five years in prison on charges of “carrying ammunition and arms,” and to death on charges of “armed resistence against the Islamic Republic of Iran.” After the Supreme Court confirmed the sentences, Mehdi Ghassemzadeh was executed in 2008, and Younes Aghayan has remained on death row inside Orumiyeh Prison since then. Mehdi Ghassemzadeh was executed without the knowledge of his family and his court-appointed lawyer, and according to the source, his body was never returned to his family for burial.

Iran - Immediately stop the execution of political prisoner Behrouz Alkhani

URGENT ACTION

HRANA News Agency – Death sentence of political prisoner, Behrouz Alkhani, was confirmed in Supreme Court and he is close to execution.
According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Behrouz Alkhani was arrested in 2009 along with 15 men convicted of cooperating with PEJAK.
After several months, he was convicted of murdering of Khoy’s attorney general and was sentenced to death.
His verdict was confirmed in Supreme Court.
He has passed 1 year and six month in jail and most of this period, he had been held in solitary confinement in Urmia’s intelligence office.
“He has been tortured a lot; his leg had been pierced by electric drill and his hand’s fingers been broken, his head been hit by electric shocker and so on.” Behrouz’ brother told HRANA’s reporter.
In spite of these tortures, my brother did not confess the murdering and the only Evidence in his case is the witness of one of my brother’s friends who said he saw my brother was worried at that night.” Behrouz’ brother continued.
“Behrouz is innocent and had no role in murdering attorney general, even the family of attorney general did not complain, and now his complainant is public” his brother also said.
Behrouz Alkhani’s health is deteriorating due to his tortures and once his court was postponed because of this reason. As doctors say, he should be held in a hospital out of prison, but authorities reject this request because of the sort of his crime.
Behrouz is also convicted of carrying and holding weapon, sentenced to 10 year in prison. His brother says about this: “security forces did not discover any weapon when he was arrested, but only attribute the charge of murdering, they attributed this charge.”
Akbar Akbarlou is one of those who was arrested with Behrouz Alkhani and was sentenced to 13 year in prison and now is released.

Tunisia – Right to freedom of information for Tunisian Journalists

In Tunisia, the complaint against the aggressions suffered by the media and journalists are multiplying. The complaints come from the National Union of Tunisia Journalists (SNJT), of Reporters sans frontières (RSF) and Centre de Tunis pour la Liberté de la Presse (CTLP).

The journalists accuse the government of trying to bring the media under its control. Following the revolution that took place on January 14, 2011, the former propaganda media of the Ben Ali regime were supposed to become independent newspapers and broadcasters. But the government, under the leadership of the conservative Islamic Ennahda party voted into power a year ago, has replaced the heads of the broadcasters and former state-run press organizations in recent months. The new directors, journalists argue, are friendly to the Ennahda party or to the former regime and intervene directly in programs and press coverage. Such intervention is illegal under Tunisia's new press laws, which were drafted shortly after the revolution.

Iran – Diplomatic pressure for the immediate release of 18 Iranian journalists

URGENT ACTION

Abolfazl Abedini Nasr is a journalist, political activist and campaigner for human rights by the regime sentenced to 12 years in prison. In September of 2010 Abedini was beaten in prison in Ahvaz. In the same month the journalist was transferred to the notorious Evin prison.
Arash Saghar is a journalist and political activist condemned by the regime to 8 years in prison. Currently he is illegally detained in Evin prison.
Bahman Ahmadi Amouee is a journalist sentenced to 5 years in prison. He was jailed June 19, 2009. In July 2010, together with 14 other prisoners went on hunger strike to protest against ill-treatment in Evin prison. Prison officials punished them by denying family visits for a month.
Mohammad Davari is a journalist, political activist and professor. He was jailed after telling of the alleged abuses and rapes occurred in the detention center at Kahrizak. He was unjustly sentenced to 6 years in prison. He is now at the Evin prison.
Mohammad Reza Moghiseh is a journalist sentenced to 6 years in prison. Is illegally detained in the notorious Evin prison.
Mohammad Sedigh Kaboudvand is a journalist and human rights activist sentenced to 11 years in prison by the regime. Kaboudvand is located in Evin prison.
Saeed Matinpour is a journalist and human rights activist. was arrested July 12, 2009. He was sentenced to 8 years in prison. He spent most of his captivity in solitary confinement. He has heart problems. Matinpour is illegally detained in Evin prison.
Siamak Ghaderi is a journalist and blogger. Is held in Evin Prison where he is serving 4 years in prison.
Kamal Sharifi is the journalist who is serving the longest sentence. It is located in Miandoab prison where he is serving 30 years in prison.
Ahmad Zeidabadi is a journalist and political activist. He is serving a sentence of 6 years in the notorious Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht).
Heshmatollah Tabarzadi is a journalist and political activist. He has been detained illegally in Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht) where he is serving 7 years in prison.
Keyvan Samimi is a journalist imprisoned on June 14, 2009. Samimi was subjected to ill treatment. The journalist is in poor health and suffering from liver problems. He is now at the Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht). The prison houses violent inmates.
Masoud Bastani is a journalist who is serving a sentence of 6 years at Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht). The authorities have limited the family to a visit every two weeks. In July 2010, the family of the journalist Bastani said that he suffered from an infection in the jaw. No doctor has helped to heal the journalist.
Mehdi Mahmoudian is a journalist and political activist sentenced to 5 years at the Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht).
Adnan Hassanpour, journalist and activist, was jailed Jan. 25, 2007. In July 2007 he was sentenced to death. After a series of appeals, in May 2010, the court sentenced him to 15 years in prison. It is located at the prison of Sanandaj.
Hamed Abolhassani is a student and journalist. Is serving a sentence of 20 years in prison unknown.
Alireza Roshan is a reporter with Sharq Newspaper and an activist for the rights of Dervishes. Currently he is illegally detained in Evin prison. Mr. Roshan is serving five years in prison
Shiva Nazar Ahari is a human rights activist, blogger and a founding member of the Committee of Human Rights Reporters. Shiva Nazar Ahari appeared at Evin on September 8, 2012, to serve a 4 year prison sentence.

Siamak Ghaderi is a journalist and blogger. Is held in Evin Prison where he is serving 4 years in prison. Kamal Sharifi is the journalist who is serving the longest sentence. It is located in Miandoab prison where he is serving 30 years in prison.
Ahmad Zeidabadi is a journalist and political activist. He is serving a sentence of 6 years in the notorious Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht).
Heshmatollah Tabarzadi is a journalist and political activist. He has been detained illegally in Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht) where he is serving 7 years in prison.
Keyvan Samimi is a journalist imprisoned on June 14, 2009. Samimi was subjected to ill treatment. The journalist is in poor health and suffering from liver problems. He is now at the Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht). The prison houses violent inmates.
Masoud Bastani is a journalist who is serving a sentence of 6 years at Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht). The authorities have limited the family to a visit every two weeks. In July 2010, the family of the journalist Bastani said that he suffered from an infection in the jaw. No doctor has helped to heal the journalist.
Mehdi Mahmoudian is a journalist and political activist sentenced to 5 years at the Rejaei Shahr Prison (Gohardasht). Adnan Hassanpour, journalist and activist, was jailed Jan. 25, 2007. In July 2007 he was sentenced to death. After a series of appeals, in May 2010, the court sentenced him to 15 years in prison. It is located at the prison of Sanandaj.
Hamed Abolhassani is a student and journalist. Is serving a sentence of 20 years in prison unknown.
Alireza Roshan is a reporter with Sharq Newspaper and an activist for the rights of Dervishes. Currently he is illegally detained in Evin prison. Mr. Roshan is serving five years in prison
Shiva Nazar Ahari is a human rights activist, blogger and a founding member of the Committee of Human Rights Reporters. Shiva Nazar Ahari appeared at Evin on September 8, 2012, to serve a 4 year prison sentence.
The Iranian government must protect the freedom of the press. Must guarantee a fair trial and protect the health of journalists unjustly condemned. Every innocent journalist in prison represents suffering a freedom denied.

Iran – Immediate medical care for lawyer Iranian Javid Houtan Kian

HRANA News Agency –  Javid Houtan Kian Iranian lawyer, political prisoner in Tabriz Central Prison is in health deterioration due to lack of medical consideration.
According to a report by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), this imprisoned lawyer is suffering from Kidney and intestinal infections and is being rejected for medical examination.
Mr. Javid Houtan Kian is a lawyer who represented Mrs. Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, when she was accused of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning in 2010. He supported her son, Sajjad Ghaderzadeh’s campaign to raise international awareness about his mother’s case.
He was arrested by members of the Ministry of Intelligence in October 2010 following her conviction, together with two German journalists and Sajjad Ghaderzadeh, Sakineh’s son. He was accused of acting against national security and sentenced to 11 years in prison following a televised confession and was barred from practising law for 5 years. The journalists and Sajjad Ghaderzadeh, who had been subjected to severe torture, were later released.
In September 2011 HRANA News Agency conducted an interview with Javid’s defence lawyer, Mr. Naghi Mahmoudi, who had been given permission to visit him. He reported that he barely recognised Javid, who had lost about half his body weight in the 6 months he had been held. He had been severely tortured and kept in solitary confinement. His nose had been broken, as had a number of his teeth and he had been burned with cigarettes many times. He had been tortured for hours at a time and passed round like a football between 20 and 25 guards. He was moved from Evin Prison to Tabriz where he has been kept on a ward designated for the insane and HIV-positive intravenous drug-users. Following the interview, Mr. Naghi Mahmoudi was denied further visits to Javid.
In March last year he managed to send an open letter from prison to important individuals and organisations round the world, setting out his case.

I would like to take the opportunity to call your attention to the case of lawyer Iranian Javid Houtan Kian.
Mr Javid Houtan Kian is the lawyer who defended Sakineh Ashtiani. Mr Houtan Kian was arrested Oct. 10, 2010. He spent several days in solitary confinement in Evin prison and then transferred to the prison in Tabriz, in the section for drug addicts and AIDS patients. Mr Houtan Kian was tortured and threatened. I are very concerned for his illegal detention. Mr Houtan Kian has been accused of acting against national security and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Javid Houtan Kian is in health deterioration due to lack of medical consideration.
This imprisoned lawyer is suffering from Kidney and intestinal infections.
I ask immediate medical attention for its worrying state of health.
