Iran - Immediate release of political prisoner Arjang Davoodi

URGENT ACTION

HRANA News Agency - 22nd March, 2014

HRANA News Agency – Arjang Davoodi, the political prisoner of central Bandar Abbas prison, has been kept in a room alone since four months ago.
According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Arjang Davoodi has been transferred from special political prisoners’ ward to suit number 5 of this prison, on November 13, 2013, and kept alone since that time.
He is kept in a 12 square meter within suit number 5 of prison which has one toilet and one bathroom.
This political prisoner is absolutely cut off from other prisoners and do not have any contact with them. Even during the rest, he is alone.
An informed source said to HRANA’s reporter, “Arjang Davoodi is exiled to Bandar Abbas prison and kept at isolated detention. All of these authorities’ actions are because Arjang Davoodi has refused to send a letter to Mr. Khamenehei and request for pardon”.
He added, “Even when Arjang Davoodi becomes sick he is not allowed to go to clinic and physician would go to his room and visit him. About one month ago, a physician visited him and ordered for his transfer to a medical center outside of prison, but authorities did not allow”.
Need to be mentioned, during last four months an agent specifically has been assigned for him during 24 hours and even during the common transfer private cars are used.
Arjang Davoodi has been sent to court two times during this period, first time on February 18, 2014, on branch number 3 of revolutionary court of Bandar Abbas, governed by judge Damsaz, for his charge regarding Fight against God’s will, but due to absence of attorney, court was halted.
Second time, on March 8, 2014, he was transferred to branch number two of revolutionary court of Bandar Abbas, on charge of insulting supreme leader for which he was already interrogated in ward 209 of Evin prison.
This senior political prisoner who has been deprived of furlough was transferred from ward number 12 of Rajai Shahr to solitary confinements of Evin prison, on July, 2013, and after 127 days in solitary confinement, exiled to Bandar Abbas prison.
Need to be mentioned, Arjang Davoodi has served his first ten years sentence but due to profiling, he is sentenced to 20 years and 8 months in prison.

Hello Ms. Ribecco.

We thank you for your communication on the Asia Bibi case. I attach two files that may be of interest to you. One is the public summary of the letter that the Special Procedures mechanism sent to the Government on the case, and here is the link to the High Commissioner's statement during her visit to Pakistan in 2012.  No reply has been sent to the Special Procedures- letter.

Pakistan - Release of Asia Bibi and the review of the norms on the blasphemy. Letter the office of Jean Lambert (Chair of Delegation for relations with the countries of South Asia -European Parliament) - 12/03/2014

Dear Maria Carmela,

Thank you for your email and apologies for the delayed reply. Jean is very aware and active on the situation of the blasphemy laws, having raised this a number of times in meetings with the Pakistani Ambassador to the EU, NGOs and other individuals.
As you would be aware, the blasphemy laws have been, and have the potential to be abused in convicting innocent civilians. More worrying is the death penalty that these convictions can carry. Jean is concerned about the continuing case of Asia Bibi, as well the numerous other Muslims, Hindus, Christians and other religions that are susceptible to these laws.
The European Parliament recently adopted a report on Pakistan's regional role where it:
"27.  Reiterates its deep concern that Pakistan’s blasphemy laws – which can carry the death sentence and are often used to justify censorship, criminalisation, persecution and, in certain cases, the murder of members of political and religious minorities – are open to a misuse that affects people of all faiths in Pakistan; underlines that the refusal to reform or repeal the blasphemy laws creates an environment of persistent vulnerability for minority communities; calls on the Pakistani government to implement a moratorium on the use of these laws, as a first step towards revising or revoking them, and to investigate and prosecute, as appropriate, campaigns of intimidation, threats, and violence against Christians, Ahmadis, and other vulnerable groups;"
You can find the full text of the report attached. Thank you again for raising this important issue.

Poonam Datar
