Text of the letter:

Your Excellency,

We would like to take this opportunity to attract your attention and support the appeal of many human rights activists currently detained in Iranian prisons.

We support the appeal of human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, currently incarcerated in Iran’s Qarchak Prison.

Ms. Sotoudeh asked to pay close attention to the large number of executions that took place in prisons. Such executions take place after sentences that violate the rights to a fair trial.

We support the appeal of political prisoner Arash Sadeghi, detained in Rajaee Shahr prison.

Mr. Sadeghi reiterated the lack of adequate medical care, of political prisoners who risk contracting COVID-19 and of detainees transferred to prisons far from their families.

His wife Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, a writer and human rights defender, is detained in a ward with around 50 inmates convicted of drug-related offenses. Ms. Ebrahimi was convicted of writing a story about stoning.

There are many testimonies that tell of forced disappearances, torture, ill-treatment and overcrowded prisons.

Over the years there have been many activists who have started the hunger strike in prison precisely to report the serious living conditions in which journalists, bloggers, lawyers, students and human rights activists find themselves. Persons persecuted by the Iranian government for opposing the strict rules of a country that does not recognize freedom for its people.

We reiterate the violation of several articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Article 3 - Everyone has the right to life, liberty and the security of person.

Article 5 - No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, in human or degrading treatment or punishment.

Article 9 - No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

Article 10 - Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

We ask for strong diplomatic pressure for the immediate release of all journalists, bloggers, lawyers, students and human rights activists currently in prison.

We thank you in advance for your time on this important and urgent matter.

Sincerely.
