Ethiopia - Immediate release Journalist Reeyot Alemu

URGENT ACTION

Reeyot Alemu has been imprisoned in Ethiopia for more than a year, branded as a terrorist. She is one of many journalists who have been arrested, interrogated and threatened in her country. What makes Alemu exceptional are her commitment to work for independent media when the prospect of doing so became increasingly dangerous, her refusal to self-censor in a place where that practice is standard, and her unwillingness to apologize for truth-telling, even though contrition could win her freedom. In jail, Alemu was offered clemency if she agreed to testify against journalist colleagues. She refused and was sent to solitary confinement for 13 days as punishment for her failure to cooperate. She is currently being kept at Kality prison, which is known for its filthy conditions. Recently, she has fallen ill; in April of this year she underwent surgery at nearby hospital to remove a tumor from her breast, after which she was returned to jail with no recovery time.
“I believe that I must contribute something to bring a better future,” Alemu said in an earlier interview with the IWMF. “Since there are a lot of injustices and oppressions in Ethiopia, I must reveal and oppose them in my articles.” Alemu said one of her “principles” is “to stand for the truth, whether it is risky or not.”
To work for free media in Ethiopia is indeed a risk. The country has the second-highest number of imprisoned journalists in Africa, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, after notoriously oppressive Eritrea. Late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi publicly attacked non-state members of the press, calling them “messengers” of terrorist groups. Increasingly, “terrorist” is a label attached to any entity with an opinion on politics, social issues or human rights that does conform to government rhetoric. In the capital city of Addis Ababa, Alemu worked for numerous, often short-lived independent publications. At least four news outlets to which she contributed were forced out of business by the Ethiopian government. Her reporting explored the root causes of poverty, lack of balance in national politics and gender equality. In 2010, she founded her own publishing house and a monthly magazine called Change, both of which were shuttered.

Saudi Arabia - Immediate release of blogger Raef Badawi

URGENT ACTION

A Jeddah court on July 29, 2013, convicted a liberal activist of violating Saudi Arabia’s anti-cybercrime law and sentenced him to 600 lashes and seven years in prison. The Criminal Court found Raif Badawi, the founder of the Free Saudi Liberals website, guilty of insulting Islam through his website and in comments he made on television, and added three months to his term for “parental disobedience.”
The charges against Badawi were based solely on his peaceful exercise of his right to free expression, Human Rights Watch said. Badawi established his online platform in 2008, to encourage debate on religious and political matters in Saudi Arabia. He has been detained in Jeddah’s Buraiman prison since his arrest on June 17, 2012. Criminal Court Judge Faris al-Harbi dropped a charge of apostasy, which carries the death penalty, after Badawi assured the court on July 24 that he is a Muslim.
“This incredibly harsh sentence for a peaceful blogger makes a mockery of Saudi Arabia’s claims that it supports reform and religious dialogue,” said Nadim Houry, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “A man who wanted to discuss religion has already been locked up for a year and now faces 600 lashes and seven years in prison.”
Badawi’s lawyer, Waleed Abu al-Khair, told Human Rights Watch that Judge al-Harbi read the verdict aloud during a trial session on July 29, and that the court will send Abu al-Khair a written notification by August 6, and give him 30 days to appeal.
Abu al-Khair said that the judge sentenced Badawi to five years in prison for insulting Islam and violating provisions of Saudi Arabia’s 2007 anti-cybercrime law through his liberal website, affirming that liberalism is akin to unbelief. The judge ordered the closure of the website and added two years to Badawi’s sentence for insulting both Islam and Saudi Arabia’s Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, or religious police, in comments during television interviews.

Bahrain - Immediate release of blogger Mohammed Hassan and photojournalist Hussain Hubail

URGENT ACTION

Update - 1 Aug 2013
More than 45 hours after his arrest, there is still no confirmed information on the whereabouts and wellbeing of arrested blogger Mohammed Hassan, who is now considered subjected to enforced disappeared.
Hassan’s family received a brief call yesterday from him in which they were informed he will be transferred to the dry dock detention center, but when they went there today, 1 Aug 2013, the prison administration denied having him. They were not able to get any further information or get access to Mohammed Hassan. His lawyer has been unable to contact him as well.
In addition to the concern of Mohammed Hassan’s enforced disappearance, an award winning photojournalist and close friend of Hassan’s, Hussain Hubail (21), was arrested last night, 31 July 2013, from Bahrain International Airport while on his way to Dubai, UAE. His family went to ask about him at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) but the administration denied having Hubail in their custody. As such, Hussain Hubail is now also considered subjected to enforced disappearance as there is still no information on his whereabouts and wellbeing. Hubail won 1st place in a photography contest run by Alwasat newspaper in May 2013 for a photograph of protesters amid clouds of tear gas. BCHR has information that a photo in which Hussain appeared covering one of the opposition societies rallies, was shown to detainees in the past months at the CID and the interrogators were trying to find the identity of the photographer in that photo. The Bahrain Center for Human Rights believes that Hussain Hubail has been targeted because of his work as a photojournalist.
The Bahrain Center for Human Rights calls on the international community to apply real pressure on the Government of Bahrain to demand the immediate release of blogger Mohammed Hassan and photojournalist Hussain Hubail. To add to that, the BCHR calls for an end of the Government of Bahrain’s systematic targeting of online users and news providers who are exercising their right to freedom of expression in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

A massacre of asylum seekers in detention center Hums east of Tripoli

Dear Mrs Ribecco,
Thank you for your message. We would like to apologize for the delay.
We hereby confirm that your message has been forwarded to the relevant services of the European External Action Service for information purposes.
So far the EU did not receive confirmation about the facts mentioned in the petition. In this regard it would be useful to know the exact date of the abuses you describe which allegedly took place in the detention center of Hums (Tripoli).
We share the concerns regarding the worrying situation of migrants in Libyan detention centres. The EU frequently raises this matter with the Libyan government; the last time was on 27 May when Prime Minister Ali Zeidan visited Brussels and met Presidents Barroso and Van Rompuy. Mr Zeidan underlined the importance that his government attaches to the respect and compliance with Human Rights and said that Ministries of Justice and Interior are working hard to address HR violations which undermine the principles of the 17 February Revolution.
A positive development is that several detention centres previously under the control of militias passed under the authority of the Ministry of Interior. The EU funded programme implemented by IOM is working with the Ministry of Interior to train its staff on Human Rights and to revise the law 19 on illegal migration.
The EU and IOM are monitoring closely the situation and are meeting regularly the NGOs defending the rights of migrants like Habeisha Centre, the International Federation of Human rights or Amnesty International.
The civilian border mission that deployed in May 2013 will train, mentor and advise Libyans in integrated border management. Human rights training is already programmed to be part of this capacity delivery, both as a prerequisite of EU support and at the specific request of the Libyan authorities.
We hope you find this information useful. Please contact us again if you have other questions.

With kind regards,

--------------------------------------------------
His Excellency,
A massacre of asylum seekers in detention center Hums east of Tripoli. The situation of refugees Sub-Saharan Africans in Libya is proving more and more hell. Increased to three people killed by Libyan soldiers. It all started yesterday morning and throughout the day there was a high tenziono between refugees and military until that late in the evening, the military said in the supervision of the detention center for asylum seekers to Hums east of Tripoli, where they are detained hundreds of asylum seekers and political refugees, already recognized by UNHCR in Sudan, pacificamnte protesting against the appalling conditions of detention, ill-treatment and can even killings, as happened last night. Opposite to the demands and hunger strike deployed by desperate women by living conditions, lack of respect for their human dignity, women who are pregnant need of medical supervision and assistance that does not receive anything, the response of the Libyan military and was to beat up a guy like carpio offering, and then shoot him for no reason. The soldiers also shot against women screaming in front of the killing of one of their companions, the soldiers beat and shot against women to reduce them to silence. The latest updates from Tripoli which increased to three died under the blows of the Libyan military, this is a crime against humanity, and in total violation of human rights and international conventions protecting the rights of refugees. European pressure to close the doors of Europe is costing the lives of many refugees.I appeal to the European Parliament to act decisively on the government in Tripoli, the references to respect for human rights and the rights of asylum seekers. Free all refugees be handed over into the hands of UNHCR.
