TEXT LETTER

Dear Petitioner,

Thank you for your letter of 16 June 2022 addressed to the High Representative.

A shared commitment to the universal values of democracy, the rule of law and the respect of human rights is the basis for the EU’s cooperation and partnership with Egypt. The EU raises human rights issues with Egypt systematically, including through the EU Delegation in Cairo, and follows closely the cases mentioned in your letter.

The EU-Egypt Association Council on 19 June 2022 was an opportunity to highlight a wide array of human rights issues in line with the EU’s position, which reiterates the EU’s call to release detained human rights defenders and journalists in Egypt. 

In April 20223 the EU Special Representative for Human Rights visited Egypt and held comprehensive discussions with his Egyptian counterparts on a number of salient human rights issues.

The EU will continue working together with Egypt to uphold and protect human rights.
