Iran - Immediate release student activist Maryam Shafipour
URGENT ACTION
theguardian.com, Monday 3 March 2014
An Iranian court has sentenced a leading student activist and human rights campaigner to seven years in prison for peaceful political activism.
Maryam Shafipour, 29, who is being held in a women's wing of Evin prison in Tehran, was found guilty of "spreading propaganda" and "gathering and colluding" against the ruling system. She was arrested in July after being summoned for questioning and was kept in solitary confinement for more than two months without access to her lawyer.
The opposition website Sahamnews reported on Sunday that her sentence was issued by Abolghasem Salavati, a judge at the Islamic revolutionary court. He has handed down heavy sentences to activists and campaigners in recent years, especially in the aftermath of the disputed presidential election in 2009. It was not clear if Shafipour had access to legal representation in the court.
Maryam Shafipour
Maryam Shafipour was jailed 'merely for peacefully expressing her views', says Amnesty.
In 2009, Shafipour, a student of agricultural engineering from the Imam Khomeini International University in Qazvin, a province west of Tehran, campaigned for the opposition leader and former presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi, and was a member of the women's committee for his campaign. She was first arrested in 2010 and subsequently given to a one-year suspended prison term. She has since been barred from continuing her education and expelled from university. Other student activists imprisoned in Iran include Majid Tavakkoli, Bahareh Hedayat, Seyyed Zia Nabavi, Majid Dori and Navid Khanjani.
A relative of Shafipour told the opposition website Kaleme that the activist had been under pressure from her interrogators to confess and had been mistreated and tortured in jail.
In December, the Committee of Human Rights Reporters in Iran (CHRR) reported that Shafipour's health was deteriorating in Evin.
"In the past week her high blood pressure reached dangerous levels rendering her unconscious and she was transferred to the prison's infirmary," CHRR reported.
"Despite the recommendation by the prison's doctor that Shafipour immediately receive an MRI, the prison authorities did not comply. In addition during the past weeks Maryam Shafipour has been suffering from extreme toothache but she has not been seen by a dentist nor been allowed to receive medical attention for her teeth."
Amnesty International has also said that Shafipour reportedly passed out in December after experiencing an irregular heartbeat.
The charity's Middle East and north Africa deputy director, Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, said on Monday: "Maryam Shafipour's conviction is a chilling reminder of how little Iran's human rights record has changed since 2009, when students were arrested in droves during postelection unrest.
"That a student could be jailed for seven years merely for peacefully expressing her views or supporting an opposition politician defies belief.
"Maryam Shafipour should be immediately and unconditionally released, and allowed to continue her studies. She should not spend the next seven years languishing in Evin prison."

Interrogators of Imprisoned Iranian Blogger Hossein Maleki Threatened To Let Him Die From Medical Neglect. Letter sent to Dr. Ahmed Shaheed -11/09/2013
John Burke's letter that I sent today to Dr. Ahmed Shaheed
Link:
Your Excellency Dr. Shaheed,
I am contacting your office
to convey my extreme alarm over the deteriorating health of imprisoned Iranian
blogger Hossein Ronaghi Maleki. His jailers have deliberately withheld
critically needed medical care from him, which is in gross violation of both international
law and Iranian prison regulations. Furthermore, it has recently come to light
that his interrogators have threatened that they will let him die from medical
neglect in prison if he continues to refuse to "cooperate" with them.
Hossein's father has appealed directly to your office for your intercession to
save the life of his son. I am writing to you to urge you to hear this father's
desperate appeal.
The office of Tehran's
prosecutor has officially denied medical furlough for Hossein Maleki. To read
more about his condition and the background of his case, please see:
I ask you to urgently
contact the prosecutor's office and all levels of the Islamic Republic
judiciary and prison administration to insist that they comply with both
international law and their own regulations. Iran’s State Prison Organization
regulations also provide that prison inmates be transferred to hospital outside
the prison facility, when necessary. The United Nations Standard Minimum Rules
for the Treatment of Prisoners require that authorities transfer all those held
needing specialist treatment to specialized institutions, including civilian
hospitals.
On behalf of Hossein Ronaghi
and his family, I thank you for your
urgent attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Mariacarmela Ribecco

Your Excellency,
We want to take the opportunity to call your attention to the case of Syrian
activists Mazen Darwish, Hussein Ghrer, Hani al-Zitani and Bilal Ahmed Bilal.
Mazen Darwish is director of the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of expression.
Hussein Ghrer is blogger and graduate at the Faculty of Information Engineering.
Hani Zitani is a graduate of the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Sociology and university teacher.
The process of Mazen Darwish, Hussein Gharir and Hani Zaitani is resumed on August 21st.
Arrested on 6 February 2012 because of their peaceful commitment to freedom of expression, they are facing up on 15 years of imprisonment with forced labour on a charge of “publicising terrorist actions” under article 8 of an anti-terrorism law that President Assad signed in 2012.
Bilal Ahmed Bilal is graduate of Arts and Humanities at the University of Damascus. Worked as a television journalist and filmmaker in Syria. Bilal has been held for over a year incommunicado.
Bilal Ahmed Bilal was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a military court on 12 June because of his coverage of events in the west Damascus district of Mo’damieh Sham in 2011.

We want to take the opportunity to call your attention to the case of Syrian activists Mazen Darwish, Hussein Ghrer, Hani al-Zitani and Bilal Ahmed Bilal.
Bilal Ahmed Bilal is graduate of Arts and Humanities at the University of Damascus.
Worked as a television journalist and filmmaker in Syria. Bilal has been held for over a year incommunicado. It was reported by a released prisoner that Bilal was taken from the capital’s Mezzeh airport to Sednaya prison and has not been seen since April 2012.
We call for a strong diplomatic pressure. Their detention is unlawful and their lives are in danger.
Thanking you in advance for your time on this important and urgent matter.
